About the African Virtual University

The African Virtual University "university without walls"

Since its inception in 1997, the AVU has aimed to provide internationally recognised computer science and business programs to the African continent. Since that time, the AVU has developed into an independent organisation comprising 30 universities in French and English-speaking African countries with students and professionals in 18 African countries receiving over 3,000 hours of interactive instruction. More than 24,000 students have completed semester-long courses in technology, engineering, business and the sciences and over 3,500 professionals have attended executive and professional management seminars on topics such as strategy and innovation, entrepreneurship and e-commerce.

The AVU currently provides education programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; access to online educational materials including an on-line digital library with over 1,000 full text journals; access to high speed Internet services and learning centres with multimedia PCs.

By 2007 the AVU aims to be recognised as a highly professional organisation providing quality academic services throughout the world; providing equitable access to affordable quality education at tertiary level for all people; providing access within Africa to high-quality educational resources of global standards including learning programs, a digital library and an online portal; the network hub of Higher Education institutions in Africa; and a recognised centre of excellence for academic programs originating from African universities.

About RMIT University

Established in 1887, RMIT University, located in Melbourne Australia, has over 50,000 students studying university and vocational award programs in Australia, including more than 8,000 international students. A further 10,000 students study offshore.

Faculty of Applied Science

The Faculty of Applied Science is one of the largest faculties in RMIT University. The Faculty provides a wide range of study and research areas and offers more than 100 academic programs across all levels. The Faculty of Applied Science at RMIT has a strong culture of producing readily employable graduates who are creative, critical thinkers and potential leaders. The Faculty has particularly strong links with industry and professions, which ensures direct opportunities for joint projects and employment opportunities for graduates. A wide range of programs are delivered internationally, especially in Singapore, Hong Kong and Vietnam.

School of Computer Science and Information Technology

The School of Computer Science and Information Technology (CS and IT) is part of the Faculty of Applied Science and is one of the largest Computer Science and Information Technology schools in Australia with around 60 academic, technical and administrative staff. It presently caters for approximately 3500 students, including more than 500 international students. The school also has around 50 students undertaking research degrees at Masters and PhD levels. CS and IT has offered fully online programs since 1998. The online program has enrolled 3,000 students to date.
