Training Facilities and Environment

RMIT Flight Training Facilities
All practical and theoretical training is conducted at RMIT Flight Training facilities located at Point Cook Airfield, 20 kilometres south west of the centre of Melbourne.

Flight training facilities consist of a modern, purpose built, pilot training complex which is the former home of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Flying Training School. Point Cook is the oldest operating airfield in the world and the birthplace of the RAAF.

Training Environment
Point Cook Airfield training environment is ideally situated with easy access to a variety of airspace, terrain and urban development which maximises navigational experience.

  • The 4,500 feet of airspace over the airfield allows unrestricted training manoeuvres. The low level of aircraft movements and co-ordination between users at Point Cook minimises circuit congestion and delays and enables more take-offs and landings per hour. This environment ensures rapid development of basic skills and confidence. Access to three different control zone levels and precision approach aids is available within a 50 kilometre radius of Point Cook. Approach aids include four Instrument Landing System (ILS) approaches within a 15 kilometre radius and numerous VHF Omni Directional Radio (VOR)/ Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) approaches within a 20 kilometre radius.
  • Learning to deal with variable weather conditions created by mountains, sea and city environments enables trainee professional pilots to develop the confidence and capability to handle command under all conditions.
